Whitey and Blackie | | Why Big Moon Ragdolls began~
Big Moon Ragdolls began with a mean, short haired, black, feral cat that continued to have wild kittens. After watching several litters of kittens born and rarely surviving, we decided to stop the cycle, catch the kittens, socialize them, and find good homes for them; also having the humane society pick up the mother cat and hopefully have her fixed.
It was a tough decision. We knew the mother cat would most probably be put down because she was totally wild and very mean, but it was the only way to stop the cycle and save the kittens. Three weeks after knowing that the wild cat had given birth, we came home one day to see three little kittens run into our green house. Two of the kittens were black with white markings and one was the most beautiful, cream colored little puff ball with ice blue eyes! I said to my husband "that is the most beautiful kitten I've ever seen!" That was saying a lot from a girl who grew up on a farm with kittens and cats everywhere.
We were able to catch one of the black kittens and the "puff ball." The third kitten was too wild to snare. We took them into our house and bottle fed them for weeks. They hissed at us everyday. We began to wonder if they would ever be socialized enough to be given away. We walked into their little room one morning to find them both purring and they didn't stop purring. They became two of the most loving, wonderful little fellows! Needless to say we couldn't give them away and we kept them both. We called the black one "Blackie" and the "puff ball" "Whitey."
Whitey was definitely our favorite. He was so unique. He would follow us wherever we went and always wanted to be part of whatever activity was going on. We often joked he was more like a dog than a cat. As Whitey grew, he developed very distinctive markings and got huge! Even our vet would say "he's so big; I've never seen such a big boned cat!" Well, in case you don't know, Ragdolls are the biggest cat in the Guinness book of world records!
We'd had Whitey for seven and half years when we moved. He had always been an outdoor cat, and when we got to our new house, he ran away. We never found him. It was a deep loss for our family and a hard lesson about letting cats live outside. We spent hours upon hours searching our neighborhood, talking to neighbors, putting out signs, but to no avail. It was more devastating than we could have imagined.
Not knowing what kind of mix Whitey was, it seemed impossible to find any cat like him. In the vet's office one day, my daughter was flipping through a cat encyclopedia book and came to a page with a picture of a cat that looked exactly like Whitey! It could have been a picture of him. And even more importantly, it described his personality to a "T"! It was, of course, a Ragdoll. My vet said "I don't know what that cat is but, it's definitely what Whitey was." She went on to explain how cats can have different kittens in the same litter fathered by different male cats. While looking at the different marking of Ragdolls, I instantly recognized Whitey's father. He was a big tom cat in our neighborhood, and was clearly a blue lynx point Ragdoll that had not been neutered! Lucky for us!
I got on line that night and got in touch with Laurie Hart of Stellahart Ragdolls. She had one kitten available. I told her my story and sent her a picture of my cat. She laughed and told me she didn't know how, but I had a perfectly marked seal bi-color Ragdoll and the kitten she had was a seal bi-color male, too. We felt it was meant to be and Laurie shipped us "Blue" the next week. Blue was like a miniature Whitey. He is almost two now, a neutered pet, and he could not be more like our Whitey. The consistency is amazing. Everything he does reminds of our sweet Whitey. We feel so blessed to have found not only another cat as wonderful as Whitey, but a whole breed! That is why we decided that breeding these wonderful cats could only make the world a better place. A world full of Ragdolls is a world full of soft, fluffy, funny love! | |
